Value of Accounting Designations

Why are accounting designations such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) really necessary?

Many of my articles focus on the various accounting designations and how to get them. I have had people ask me in the past if these designations are even necessary, after all not all accounting and finance jobs require certification. However, my answer to this question is a resounding “Yes!”

Regardless of the type of accounting or finance specialty you decide to pursue, there is likely a designation for it. There is the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for financial accounting, Certified Management Accountant (CMA) for accountants and finance professionals working primarily with internal reporting, and there is even the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation for accountants who wish to concentrate on internal auditing. These are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to accounting and finance certifications.

No matter what you decide to focus your accounting career on, even a general CPA or CMA designation will allow you to separate yourself from the crowd when it comes to applying for a job, getting a promotion or a raise, or even helping others see your opinions on these subjects as more credible
